Behavioral based email marketing (BBEM) training. I watched Mike Michalowicz' (The Toilet Paper Entrepreneur) 30 minute blog post video on this the other day. Have you seen it? It talks about how to use psychological triggers in email marketing to get reader to take a particular course of action. Useful information!
But I check in on all of Mikey's emails no matter what their content. I always call him "Mikey" in my head because he's so funny and personable. He has no idea who I am. I also know I'm only reading the mailings he sends to thousands of people on his list every week. All the same, I'm often more interested in hearing his cheery New Jersey style "hello" than checking out his content.
So what is it about his voice that makes him so likable and attractive?
Can the same be used for speaking to groups?
Absolutely!
First of all, he speaks to his readers as if he's talking to a good friend. He consistently sounds like the person who'll take the time to walk up to you in a party full of strangers, give you a big warm welcome, and stick a cold beer in your hand.
Second, it all sounds very natural. I think he really talks to people he actually knows this way! So what's your natural voice? Does your public speaking style match the way you speak to a group of people you know well?
Check yourself here. The style of voice you use must be yours, not an imitation of someone else's. Take the time to listen to a recording of yourself speaking in public. Do you use vocabulary as if you're delivering a dissertation? Do you sound stiff? If so, stop! Tone it down.
People connect with someone that they like. Are you likable?
Be yourself. Be the you that people meet when your guard is down and you're loose, relaxed and having fun. That way you'll attract engagements with people who like your style and whom you'd like to work with most.
Have a great weekend!
